On 9/11/01, I was sitting in my first class of the day - Women’s History at the University of North Carolina.
We thought it was odd that our professor was so late starting class, but back then, no one really had a cell phone sitting on their desk. We didn’t know things the minute they happened.
About 10 minutes later, quiet chatter started spreading through the room. Our professor finally came in, told us class was canceled, and said to go back to our dorms because no one really understood what was happening yet.
Soon, we learned classes would be canceled for several days, so I, like most everyone else, packed up and headed home. I still remember that three-hour drive and the countless American flags I passed along the way. It’s hard to explain the feeling unless you experienced it.
In the days that followed, people were nicer. Kinder. More respectful. More patriotic. I truly believe the country we woke up to on 9/12 was citizenship at its peak.
