Most people brace for treatment before it's even started.

They get sweaty palms, hold their breath. Some even have the sudden urge to move away.

And almost every time, the same thing happens.

"That wasn't as bad as I thought."

The anticipation does more damage than the actual moment ever does.

I see it every week. And it's not just about needles or hands-on work, it's how most of us approach anything unfamiliar.

We build it up in our heads long before we ever face it.

It's never as bad as what we imagine beforehand.

I've been working with Caz helping to prepare her for the Lincoln Half Marathon, which she did on Sunday (well done Caz!).

Here's the pre-race advice I gave to help during her training runs...

If you've been sat at a desk all day, then you lace up ready to run and expect your legs to just switch on, they won't.

Not properly anyway.

Hours in a chair leaves your hips tight, glutes switched off, calves stiff before you've even taken a step.

Before a run, I get people to wake things up first:

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Mobility through the hips and ankles
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ A few rotational movements through the spine
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Calf raises and shoulder activation
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Even a wall sit or two

Just a few minutes. Short bursts, with breaks in between.

It's not about tiring yourself out before you start, it's about waking up what the desk switched off.

Caz shared that it's made her legs feel so much better when she sets off on her runs.

Try it before your next run and see what changes πŸƒ

There's a gate at the side of the house that leads through to the therapy room.

I've started noticing something about it.

By the time people reach it, their shoulders have already started to drop.

Just the walk through it is giving their bodies permission to release.

Regular clients have told me this for years. The gate's become part of the process before we've even started.

Whatever they've been carrying that week, work stress, broken sleep, a body that won't switch off, something shifts the second they're through it.

I think it's because they know what's waiting on the other side isn't going to ask more of them. It's going to take something off.

That's the part of this job I don't talk about enough. Not the treatment itself. The relief before it's even begun.

If it's your first visit, head round to the gate and I'll meet you there for your session.

September's been a good month.

Busy in the clinic. Busy in the background too, with the thing I've been quietly building towards for a while now.

I'm not ready to share the details yet, but I wanted to mark the moment, because it feels closer.

The rest of this year is going to bring some changes to how I work with people, and I'm genuinely excited about it, even with the nerves that come with trying something new.

Thank you for reading along, commenting, and being patient while I've been vague about all of this. It won't be much longer.

More soon 🍁

A client told me recently, "I've just been managing it for two years."

Two years of working around a shoulder that never quite settled. Adjusting how she slept. Avoiding certain movements at the gym. Telling herself it wasn't bad enough to properly deal with.

Managing feels productive, but it isn't the same as fixing.

When we finally looked at why the shoulder kept flaring, the actual cause wasn't the shoulder at all. It was a compensation pattern that had built up from an old ankle injury she'd almost forgotten about.

Two years of managing the symptom. One proper look to find where it actually started.

If you've been managing something for a while rather than resolving it, it might be worth asking why.

If your body's been on the to-do list since summer, this is a good moment to move it up.

The Full Body MOT isn't a quick fix, and it isn't guesswork.

It's a proper look at how everything's moving, working, and compensating, using the ALIGN System to find out what's actually driving the pain or the pattern, not just where it shows up.

Most people who come to me have already tried managing it. Stretching it out, resting it, hoping it settles.

Sometimes that works. Often it just delays the same problem coming back in a different place.

Fixing the root, not just the symptom, sounds different from what you've tried before.

That's usually because it is.

I'm adding something to how I work with people, and I'm still figuring out how to talk about it.

For a while now I've been training in an approach that works with the mind as much as the body. It's new territory for me, and if I'm honest, that's made me hesitate about sharing it.

Putting something out before you feel fully ready is uncomfortable. But I'd rather be honest about that than pretend I've had it all figured out from the start.

What I can say is that it fits with everything I already believe about recovery.

That the body and mind were never separate to begin with, and that real change happens when you treat people as a whole, not just the bit that hurts.

More to come once I'm ready to share properly.

Appreciate you sticking with me while I figure this bit out πŸ™

I don't just look at the part of you that hurts.

Pain rarely exists on its own. It's connected to sleep, stress, how you're breathing, what you've been carrying, physically and otherwise.

That's why the work I do has always sat across a few different approaches. Hands-on treatment. Movement. Understanding what's actually going on underneath the symptom.

Over the last while, I've been building on that even further, looking at how to support people on more than just the physical side.

Whole-person recovery isn't just something I say. It's something I keep trying to get better at actually delivering 🌿

You don't need to overhaul your whole routine to feel the benefit.

Once September settles and the diary stops changing every five minutes, it's tempting to go all in. New gym plan, new everything, all at once.

Small, consistent changes tend to outlast the big dramatic ones.

A five minute stretch before bed. Actually finishing your lunch sitting down. Ten minutes outside without your phone.

None of that sounds impressive. But it's the kind of thing that compounds quietly, especially after a summer where consistency wasn't really an option.

Progress, not perfection. Every time.

Something I've been reminded of lately: being a beginner again is uncomfortable, even when you've done this a long time.

I've spent years being the person people come to for answers.

This year, I've put myself back in the seat of not knowing, learning something properly from scratch.

It's humbling. Some weeks it's gone well. Some weeks I've felt like I'm starting from nothing.

But it's changing how I think about the work I do, not just adding a new skill on top of it.

I'll share more once it's properly ready, but for now, I'm just glad I still know how to be a student πŸ“š
