A little whimsy, a lot of wonder✨
Who says ceramics have to be serious?
Next up in our Meet the Makers series, we're celebrating two makers who bring colour, imagination and a wonderful sense of playfulness to their work.
/ GOATpierrot - creates expressive little characters, full of colour, personality and unexpected details. Each piece is a tiny character with a story of its own.
/ Rachael Bell Art - brings a similarly playful spirit to clay, creating curious cats, tiny ducks and beautifully textured ceramics that balance craftsmanship with a sense of humour.
Two distinctive approaches to ceramics, both showing how much joy and imagination can go into something made by hand.
And you'll be able to discover their work in person by joining us at SAMHAIN – A Festival of Making.

The Makkist has a home. 🌿
After many months of planning, building, changing things, changing them back again… themakkist.com is officially live.
It feels like a big little milestone.
You can now explore what The Makkist is all about, discover our upcoming markets and events, learn more about the makers and craftsmanship at the heart of what we’re building, and find out how to join us as a maker.
The online marketplace itself is still taking shape behind the scenes. That’s the next chapter, but for the first time, everything we’re creating has a place to call home.
And there’s plenty more to come.

Could your work belong at The Makkist?
Alongside our physical makers markets and events, we’re building something that exists all year round: The Makkist online marketplace.
A curated online home where people can discover and shop from independent makers across the UK, and where beautifully made work can be found beyond a single market or weekend.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time looking through the work of some incredibly talented independent makers and it’s been a reminder of exactly why The Makkist exists.
We’re looking for work rooted in craftsmanship, originality and thoughtful making. The process matters. The person behind the work matters. And the story of how something has been made matters.
You don’t need to fit a particular aesthetic. We’re looking for skill, quality and originality across ceramics, textiles, jewellery, print, art, homeware, botanical goods, paper and beyond.
So whether you’ve joined us at one of our markets before, applied for Samhain, or have only just discovered The Makkist, we’d love to see what you make.
Applications to join The Makkist online marketplace are open now.

A little look behind the scenes of curating Samhain.
Over the last few days I’ve been making some very difficult decisions about our maker line-up.
The response to Samhain was incredible. We received far more applications than we could accommodate, from such a strong mix of artists, designers and craftspeople.
Curation is about so much more than choosing the work you love. It’s about looking at the collection as a whole, balancing disciplines, materials, styles and price points to create an event that feels varied, interesting and full of things to discover.
And sometimes that means saying no to brilliant work.
To everyone who applied: thank you for trusting us with your work and for wanting to be part of what we’re creating. Whether or not we’re able to bring you into the Samhain story this time, I’ve genuinely loved discovering what you do.
Emails will be heading out very shortly.
And then comes the exciting bit… introducing you to the makers who’ll be joining us at The Haberdashery this Samhain.

The Samhain line up is taking shape.
The response to Samhain has been wonderful, with makers, artists and craftspeople bringing together a mix of work that feels perfectly suited to a weekend rooted in creativity, craftsmanship and the turning of the seasons.
Maker applications for Samhain – A Festival of Making will close on Monday 31 August at 12 noon.
So if you’ve been thinking about joining us but haven’t quite got round to applying yet, we’d still really love to hear from you.

There’s so much more behind something handmade than the finished object.
It’s the years spent learning a skill. Knowing how a material behaves. The experiments that didn’t quite work. The small decisions made along the way. And the hands of the person who actually made it.
That’s why craftsmanship sits at the heart of The Makkist.
We want to make it easier to discover genuinely well-made, independent work and to give the people behind it a platform that values the skill, process and story just as much as the finished piece.
Because choosing handmade isn’t just about buying something different. It’s about choosing to support the skills, knowledge and independent makers we want to see continue.
And we’re always looking to discover brilliant makers.
Know someone whose work deserves to be seen by more people? Tag them below we’d love to find them.
🔥 A little more about Samhain...
We’ve loved seeing the response to our first Samhain announcements, so here’s a little more about what we’re creating.
A two-day Festival of Making at bringing together a changing programme of independent makers, creative workshops and experiences across the weekend.
We’ve got some brilliant workshops beginning to take shape, with plenty more still to reveal.
And right now, maker applications are open.
If you’re an independent maker and Samhain sounds like somewhere you’d like to be, we’d love to hear from you.
Or know someone whose work we should discover? Tag them below or send this reel their way.
