There are two very different products sold under the same name:
β Cheap protector β open underneath, loose weave, allergen escapes from every edge
β
Proper encasement β six sides, fully zipped, allergen physically can't pass through
Same packaging. Completely different result.
And even a good cover can fail if you only cover the mattress.
Your pillow is next to your face for 8 hours. Seal the mattress but leave the pillow open and you're still breathing in allergen all night.
The people who notice a real difference seal all three: mattress, pillows and duvet.
Quick checklist before you buy:οΏ½βοΈ Six-sided (wraps the whole mattress, not just the top)οΏ½βοΈ Full zip β no open edgesοΏ½βοΈ Tight weave that actually blocks allergenοΏ½βοΈ Soft and quiet β not plasticky or crinkly
If it doesn't zip shut on all sides, it's just an extra sheet.

Most mattress protectors only cover the TOP and sides. Dust mites live INSIDE the mattress, including underneath. You need SIX-SIDED sealing, top, bottom, all four sides, zip closure. Otherwise you've sealed the room but left the door open πͺ

Just diagnosed with dust mites and don't know what to buy? π
Here's the order that saves you money.
ποΈ 1. Mattress protector. Six-sided, fully zipped. Biggest reservoir in the house. Start here.
π΄ 2. Pillow protectors. Your face is there 8 hours a night. Most people skip this. It's why covers "don't work."
π 3. Duvet protector. Closes the last gap.
π§ 4. Humidity under 50%. Mites need moisture to breed.
π§Ή 5. Then extras. Vacuum, spray, purifier. Useful, but none of them seal your mattress.
β Skip for now: a topper. That's comfort, not protection. On its own it collects mites just like a bare mattress.
