The experience that shaped my career

We all hope that the moment we walk through a hospital door, we will be met with a warm smile and comforting words. But what happens when reality looks a bit different?

Years ago, around 2019, I was very sick and went to a small clinic for a consultation. I sat down, but no one bothered to ask why I was there. After waiting about 15 minutes, I walked up to a nurse and told her I needed to see a doctor. I handed her my consultation book and started explaining my symptoms.

To my shock, she flung my book onto the floor and told me to go somewhere where they could hear me in English, adding, "These bamender people everywhere."

I actually had severe typhoid and malaria so it was painful to pick up my book and walk out of that door.

But you see that particular experience? It changed my perspective forever. It inspired me to become a better nurse, one committed to living up to that expectation of offering a genuine, warm smile to every single patient who walks through our doors.
