There’s something deeply personal about maintaining the locs of someone you share your life with.

Andrew’s hair has always been my responsibility, and over time his loc journey has become something we’ve both grown alongside together. Every maintenance session carries years of trust, evolution, patience, and care — not just for his hair, but for the person wearing it.

Recently I spent time maintaining his locs while also preparing for the next chapter of his journey: growing out his undercut and eventually locking his entire head. It’s exciting to witness because I know firsthand how much intention he puts into every stage of becoming himself more fully and authentically.

Working on the hair of someone you love feels different. You know every section, every pattern, every place where the hair has changed over the years. You remember the phases, the growth, the moments attached to it all. It stops feeling like a service and becomes part of the rhythm of your lives together.

I’m grateful that PaulieLocs allows me to create not only for clients, but also for the people closest to me. Being trusted with someone’s loc journey is always meaningful, but helping shape the evolution of your life partner’s journey carries a kind of significance that’s hard to put into words.

Some appointments stay with you long after the last root is tightened.

Recently I met a woman named Susanne who had found my PaulieLocs page organically while searching for someone to trust with her locs. She came to me with 10-year-old dreadlocks that hadn’t been maintained in over five months. The moment we met, though, it stopped feeling like just another appointment.

Over the next five hours, we shared stories, perspectives, laughter, and real conversation while I worked through years of growth, history, and care woven into her locs. There was such a calm and genuine energy between us from the beginning that the entire experience felt natural — like reconnecting with someone you were somehow already meant to meet.

What I appreciate most about this work is that it’s never only about hair. Locs carry time, transformation, resilience, identity, and spirit. Being trusted to help guide someone’s journey forward — especially after years of growth — is something I never take lightly.

By the end of the session, Susanne’s roots were in a much healthier place for future maintenance, but honestly, I walked away feeling like I had gained something too. Encounters like this remind me why I do what I do through PaulieLocs and Paulieology. Real connection will always be at the center of it.

When Laura saw me dreadlocking another client, it sparked a conversation about their own desire to start a dread journey.

Laura has a crazy thick head of hair! I was stoked to get my crochet hook in there, though I grossly underestimated the time it would take. Poor Laura sat in the sun for about 5 hours while I tried to hurry the process. What resulted, though, was an incredible collection of dreadlocks with their own beautiful hair.

I’m not sure where those dreadlocks are today but I know, no matter what, they served the purposes for which they were intended. WE choose what’s best for us.

Whatever the reason for wanting dreadlocks, no one has the right to decide how we wear our hair. It’s about the journey, which to me, is about self-love and self-acceptance.

When I first saw Steve walking by, I was immediately struck by his Viking tattoos and overall style. I knew I had white blonde dreadlock extensions in the RV so I stopped him.

“I could dreadlock your hair, you know”, I said to Steve as he passed our tent.

I’m not sure he believed me at first but after a little convincing, I had him sitting in my chair and roasting in the sun while I whipped through his hair with my crochet hook.

I can’t remember how long it took but after a while I was braiding his new dreadlocks and thanking him for putting his trust in me.
