When we think about arthritis, we usually think about our joints. Pain, stiffness, swelling and flare ups. But what about the role nutrition can play?
We asked Jackie, our Nutrition & Life Coach here at TMT to share her perspective.
Jackie reminds us that inflammation can happen throughout the body and that an anti-inflammatory way of eating can be another way we support our overall health.
She shared an anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid that focuses on things like colourful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, nuts and seeds, fish, herbs and spices.
Of course, nutrition isn't a cure for arthritis and it doesn't mean you need a “perfect” diet. It’s simply another piece of the puzzle when we're looking at inflammation and supporting our bodies.

Today we’re excited to welcome Rachelle Kaasgaard back to TMT!
Rachelle is a Certified Reflexologist offering Foot Reflexology on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the day.

Reflexology is a relaxing treatment that can help ease tension, promote relaxation and support overall well being. For those living with conditions such as arthritis or chronic pain, having ways to relax and manage the stress and tension that can come along with ongoing discomfort can be an important part of self care.

We know some of you have been waiting for Reflexology to return to TMT and we’re very happy to have Rachelle back!

We know arthritis affects the body, but chronic pain can affect so much more than just our joints & muscles.
We asked Mattie, our Certified Canadian Counsellor here at TMT, to share her perspective:

“Living with chronic pain from a condition like arthritis, and its variations, can be debilitating both physically and mentally. Feeling unable to participate fully with your family, in your job, or in your community can feel like your joy is diminished and sometimes there is a loss of hope.
Although counselling cannot alleviate the physical pain, feeling validation in your emotions and experiences can help make the path feel more manageable.”

Sometimes having a safe place to talk about the frustration, changes and emotions that come with chronic pain can be an important part of taking care of yourself too.
Mattie offers individual and couples counselling at TMT, with evening appointments available. She can also direct bill many insurance companies.
Your physical health and mental health go hand in hand. Support is available for both.

FRIDAY FACT!

“My joints are aching… the weather must be changing.”
Turns out, there may actually be some truth to it!

Research suggests that changes in barometric pressure, temperature and humidity may affect arthritis pain and stiffness in some people.
Scientists still don't completely understand why, and not everyone with arthritis feels weather changes the same way.

So can your joints actually predict the weather?
Maybe not quite like a weather app… but they might be picking up on more than you think!

September is Arthritis Awareness Month in Canada

How do we get arthritis?
There isn’t just one cause. Age, genetics, previous injuries, immune system conditions and wear on the joints can all play a role.

How do we prevent it?
Not all arthritis can be prevented, but staying active, protecting your joints, maintaining overall health and preventing injuries may help reduce your risk.

How do we manage it?
Management can include movement, medical care, nutrition, pain and stress management, and supportive therapies such as massage.

That’s where TMT can help.

September is Arthritis Awareness Month, and we want to jump on board and talk about something that affects so many people.
If you or someone you know is living with arthritis, you might be surprised by the different ways our team here at TMT can offer support.
Our RMTs will talk about massage therapy, stiffness, circulation, muscle tension and treatment plans.
Jackie Goods, Nutrionist , will touch on foods that can support an anti-inflammatory way of eating and
Mattie Braden, C.C.C will talk about mental health and living with chronic pain.
Different professions with different approaches to meet one common goal, helping you feel supported through your journey.

One of the best ways to learn about food is to actually get in the kitchen and do it! Nutrition & Life Coach, Jackie Goods, is offering Nourished at Midlife, an 8 week in person womens nutrition course.

Nutrition plays such an important role in our overall health and wellness. What we eat can support our bodies, help us manage inflammation and be one piece of the puzzle when it comes to feeling our best.
We love seeing our TMT team sharing what they do out in the community and we’re happy to help spread the word!
All of the registration information is on Jackie’s poster below!
