NASA went back to the Moon—with a golf club.

On January 31, 1971, at 21:03:02 UTC, Apollo 14 blasted off from Kennedy Space Center, carrying three astronauts, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa, on NASA’s third successful mission to land on the Moon.

Coming after the near-disaster of Apollo 13, Apollo 14 had something to prove. The mission’s goal was to explore the Fra Mauro Highlands, the original target of the Apollo 13 mission, and to collect geological samples that could reveal more about the Moon’s history.

Shepard, America's first man in space, returned to fly again at age 47—making him the oldest person to walk on the Moon at the time. During two Moonwalks totaling over 9 hours, Shepard and Mitchell deployed scientific instruments, captured panoramic photographs, and collected 42 kg of lunar rock and soil.

But the mission also had a light-hearted moment that became legend: Alan Shepard hit two golf balls on the Moon, using a makeshift club he had smuggled aboard. One ball, he joked, went "miles and miles and miles."

Apollo 14 was a triumphant comeback for NASA, blending precision science with the human spirit on the lunar surface.
