Marc Marquez claimed victory in the Japanese Grand Prix Sprint at Motegi on Saturday, strengthening his challenge for the MotoGP championship as he moved to within seven points of championship leader Jorge Martin.

The Ducati rider made a brilliant start from the front row, taking the inside line at the opening corner to pass pole-sitter Martin. Marquez controlled the sprint from there and secured the win, taking five points out of Martin’s championship advantage. He now has 306 points, while Martin remains on 313 heading into Sunday’s main race.

Jorge Martin finished third after being overtaken by LCR Honda’s Diogo Moreira, who secured his first-ever MotoGP Sprint podium. Martin also came under pressure from Enea Bastianini late in the race, with both riders running outside the track limits during their battle.

The sprint also saw a major early incident involving Pedro Acosta, Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio, with Acosta crashing out after starting from the front row.

With Marquez now only seven points behind Martin, the championship battle is set for another intense showdown in Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix.

Pakistan’s men’s volleyball team saw its Asian Games gold-medal hopes come to an end after a 3-0 defeat to Iran in the semi-final.

Iran controlled the match from the beginning and produced a strong straight-sets performance to secure its place in the final. Pakistan struggled to match Iran’s intensity and consistency, as the Iranian side maintained control throughout the contest.

The defeat ended a memorable run for Pakistan, which had reached the men’s volleyball semi-finals at the Asian Games for the first time since 1962. The team had entered the last four with confidence after an impressive 3-0 victory over arch-rivals India in the quarter-final.

Pakistan dominated that quarter-final, winning 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18. After taking control of the opening set, Pakistan held its nerve during a closely contested second set before completing a convincing victory in the third.

That result raised hopes of a historic place in the Asian Games final, but Iran proved too strong in the semi-final and ended Pakistan’s challenge for the gold medal.

Pakistan’s campaign, however, is not over yet. The team will now shift its focus to the bronze-medal match, where it will face either Japan or China.

A victory in the bronze-medal contest would allow Pakistan to finish its campaign with a historic Asian Games medal and cap off an impressive run that saw the team reach the semi-finals for the first time in more than six decades.

Virtual Taekwondo made its Asian Games debut in Nagoya, using VR headsets and motion sensors to turn traditional kicks into a contact-free competition. Athletes battle through virtual avatars in mixed-gender matches without physical contact.

Competitors wear VR headsets and motion-tracking sensors that capture their movements, with matches played over three 60-second rounds. The aim is to land virtual kicks on an opponent’s body and head while reducing their digital health bar.

The new format has been praised by World Taekwondo as a safer and innovative way to experience the sport, while supporters believe it can make taekwondo more accessible to a wider audience.

Singapore’s Darren Yap won bronze, while Vietnam’s Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang reached the final after defeating Yap in the semi-final. Virtual taekwondo previously featured at the Olympic Esports Week and held its first world championships in Singapore in 2024.

With no weight classes and men and women competing together, virtual taekwondo is bringing a new technology-driven approach to martial arts at the Asian Games.
