π WORLD SMILE DAY β 2 OCTOBER** π
Today is all about something simple, contagious and completely freeβ¦ **a smile!** π
A smile can brighten someoneβs day, lift your mood and remind us that even the smallest moments of connection can make a difference.
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we believe looking after your health isn't just about aches, pains and treatment. Itβs also about helping you **move better, feel better and enjoy the things that make you smile.** β€οΈ
Whether thatβs playing with the kids, getting out for a walk, enjoying a massage, spending time with family or simply feeling comfortable in your own body β your health can play a big part in the everyday moments that matter.
So this World Smile Day, we have a little challenge for our Sunbury & Melton community:
πSmile at someone.
π€ Do something kind.
β€οΈ Check in on someone you care about.
πΏ Take a moment to appreciate something good in your day.
And rememberβ¦
A smile is one of the simplest ways to make someone's day a little brighter.*π

β INTERNATIONAL COFFEE DAY β 1 OCTOBER β
Today is International Coffee Day, so weβre celebrating that magical little cup that helps so many of us get through the morning.- Not Dr J who seems to be a coffee hater

And sometimes, looking after yourself means making time for those little things that make you feel good.
So today, grab your favourite cup, take a moment, and enjoy it. β€οΈ
And if you're heading out for your morning coffee, why not smile at the person serving you and make their morning a little brighter too? π

π CAN 10 MINUTES HELP PREVENT A MUSCLE INJURY?
If you're getting back into sport, heading to the gym, increasing your running or simply becoming more active, how you warm up could make a difference.
A 2026 systematic review of 40 studies found that structured exercise programmes combining warm-ups, strength, balance and gradual training progression can reduce injury risk.
Some key findings:
π₯ Neuromuscular warm-ups were associated with around a 41% reduction in overall injury risk.
πͺ Nordic hamstring exercises reduced hamstring injuries by approximately 57β70%.
π Dynamic warm-ups can help prepare your body for movement without the performance reduction associated with prolonged static stretching immediately before explosive exercise.
β±οΈ And perhaps the best part? Many effective programmes only required 10β20 minutes, 2β3 times per week.
A good warm-up might include:
βοΈ Brisk walking or light jogging
βοΈ Dynamic mobility
βοΈ Lunges and squats
βοΈ Balance exercises
βοΈ Core activation
βοΈ Short acceleration or movement drills
The other big takeaway?
Don't do too much, too soon.
Whether you're returning to footy, starting a running programme, joining a gym or simply increasing your daily walking, gradually increasing your workload gives your muscles and connective tissues time to adapt.
π We've broken down the research, including the exercises and recommended training approaches, in our latest Health Wise blog.

# # # π§ββοΈ Happy Hobbit Day! πΏπ
**βNot all those who wander are lostβ¦β** π£
September 22 is **Hobbit Day**, celebrating the birthdays of two of Middle-earthβs most famous Hobbits β **Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins!** ππ
And if thereβs one thing Hobbits teach us, itβs the importance of a good walk, a comfortable chair and **never underestimating the importance of second breakfast.** π
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we think Hobbits had the right idea:
πΏ Get outside and enjoy a walk
π£ Keep your body moving
π³ Donβt skip breakfastβ¦ or second breakfast!
πͺ And remember, even Hobbits need to look after their backs!
Because when you're walking all the way from **The Shire to Mordor**, you're definitely going to want your spine in good working order! ππ¦΄
**Happy Hobbit Day from Health Wise Chiropractic!**
May your feet be happy, your back be strong, and your journey be free of unnecessary detours. π§ββοΈπ

From a chiropractic perspective, remember:
β³ **Bend your knees, not just your back!**
ποΈββοΈ Keep your swing smooth β no need to put your whole body into it!
πΆββοΈ Enjoy the walk between holes
π And donβt blame your chiropractor for your terrible putting!
Whether you're a golf pro or someone who spends more time bouncing the ball off the obstacles than getting it in the hole, **get out, have some fun and keep moving!**

π¦΄π₯¦ Could Your Gut Health Help Protect Your Bones?
We usually think about gut health and digestion β but emerging research suggests your **gut may also play a role in bone health.**
A recent population study looked at whether diets that support a healthy gut microbiome were associated with **osteoporosis, muscle health and fractures.**
The results were particularly interesting for bone health. π
# # # 𦴠What did researchers find?
People with diets more supportive of healthy gut bacteria had:
β
A **lower risk of osteoporosis**
β
Associations with better bone health
πͺ Some evidence of better muscle health
β No clear direct reduction in fracture risk
Importantly, this doesn't mean that eating certain foods prevents osteoporosis or fractures. Bone health is influenced by many factors, including age, genetics, physical activity, nutrition, muscle strength and falls.
# # # π₯¦ So what does a gut-friendly diet look like?
Think **variety and fibre**:
πΎ Whole grains
π₯¦ Vegetables such as broccoli
π« Legumes and soy
π₯ Avocado
π₯ Fermented dairy
π« Fruits such as cranberries
π΅ Green tea
And don't forget that **muscles need movement and adequate protein too.** πͺ
# # # π§ The bigger picture
Researchers are increasingly interested in the **gutβbone connection**, including how gut bacteria may influence inflammation, nutrient absorption and bone metabolism.
Your bones aren't isolated from the rest of your body.
**Good nutrition + regular movement + strength training + healthy lifestyle habits = a stronger foundation for long-term musculoskeletal health.**
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we believe looking after your spine and joints is only one part of the bigger picture β **your whole-body health matters.** π
π **Read our full blog to learn more about the gutβbone connection and what the research actually found.**
# # # π Positive Thinking Day β September 13
Feeling like youβre working towards a **Ph.D. in complaining?** π
September 13 is **Positive Thinking Day** β a great reminder that sometimes a small shift in mindset can change how we approach the day.
Of course, we canβt control everything life throws at usβ¦ but we *can* choose to focus on the little things that make us feel good. π
Try this today:
β¨ Think of 3 things youβre grateful for
π Spend time with someone who makes you smile
πΆββοΈ Get outside and move your body
π΅ Take a break from the things stressing you out
π Celebrate a small win
And remember β **looking after your body can be part of looking after your overall wellbeing too.**
So take a breath, find something to smile about and make today a little more positive. πΏ

# # # π»πͺ Sitting Too Long? Your Spine Might Be Keeping Score.
Desk job? Long commute? Calder Freeway traffic? Then more time on the couch scrolling your phone?
Your day might look like:
**Sit β stiffen β tighten β ache β repeat.** π©
Research suggests that prolonged, uninterrupted sitting is associated with **neck, shoulder and lower back discomfort** β and you don't necessarily need a full workout to interrupt the cycle.
# # # πΆββοΈ Try an βExercise Snackβ!
An exercise snack is simply a **short burst of movement during your day** designed to break up long periods of sitting.
Research has found that short movement breaks can help reduce musculoskeletal discomfort, particularly when they include purposeful movement rather than simply standing up.
Try this every **30β50 minutes**:
π§ **Neck reset**
Gentle neck movements and rotations
πββοΈ **Shoulder reset**
Shoulder rolls and controlled movement
𦴠**Spinal movement**
Stand up and gently move through your spine
πΆββοΈ **Get moving**
Take a brisk walk around the office or house
πͺ **Need more of a challenge?**
A few flights of stairs can turn your movement break into a mini workout!
# # # π‘ The important bit?
**Standing still isn't necessarily enough.**
Your body was designed to **move**, not stay in one position for hours.
You don't need to wait until your back hurts before doing something about it.
**Move more often. Move regularly. Break up your sitting.**
And if persistent neck or back pain is stopping you from moving comfortably, that's where professional assessment can help.
π **We've broken down the research and practical strategies in our latest Health Wise Chiropractic blog.**
