💬 Client: “My head hurts… but my neck feels completely fine.”

🙋 Therapist: “Okay… tell me what a normal day looks like for you.”

And suddenly, things got interesting.

A client recently came to Tara Massage Therapy experiencing regular headaches but didn’t notice any obvious neck tension. As we talked, the daily routine started adding up: hours at a computer, looking down at the phone, driving, deadlines — and barely changing position between them.

When we checked the neck and shoulders, there was more muscle tension than the client had realised.

After treating Perth locals since 2013, we’ve noticed something interesting: people don’t always feel muscle tension until someone actually works on the area. Sometimes “my neck feels fine” turns into “Ohhh… THAT spot!” pretty quickly.

We focused the massage on the neck, shoulders and surrounding muscles to help those overworked areas relax.

Headaches can have many causes, so massage isn’t always the answer. But if yours seem to appear after long desk days, it may be worth paying attention to what your neck and shoulders have been doing too.

Can Tight Neck Muscles Be Connected to Headaches?

Headache again? Before blaming the coffee, the weather… or your co-workers — have you noticed what your neck and shoulders are doing?

After treating Perth locals since 2013, we’ve noticed a pattern. Some clients who mention frequent headaches also arrive with a neck that feels extremely tight, especially after long days at a computer.

That doesn’t mean tight neck muscles are always the cause of a headache — headaches can have many different causes. But hours spent looking at screens, sitting in one position or unconsciously raising your shoulders can leave the muscles around your neck feeling tired and tense.

One thing our therapists often hear? “I didn’t realise how tight my neck was until you started working on it.”

Massage may help ease everyday neck and shoulder muscle tension and give those hardworking areas a chance to relax.

If headaches keep occurring, are severe or feel unusual, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional. But if your neck simply feels like it’s been doing overtime lately… perhaps it deserves a break too.

Why Do Your Muscles Feel Fine During Exercise… Then Sore the Next Day?

During the workout: “Easy. I could do another set.”
Next morning: “Who replaced my legs overnight?”

After treating Perth locals since 2013, we've heard this story countless times. Clients often tell us the workout itself felt completely fine — then they wake up the next day wondering why sitting down, getting out of the car, or walking downstairs suddenly became a major event.

This delayed soreness can happen after your muscles have worked harder or differently than they're used to. You may notice it more after increasing weights, trying a new exercise, or returning to training after a break.

One thing we've noticed? People often focus on how they feel during exercise and forget that recovery is part of training too.

So if yesterday's workout has introduced itself properly today, give your body some recovery time. And if those tired muscles are asking for a little extra attention, a massage might feel pretty good too.

Behind the Massage Table ✨

When You Tell Us “I’m Sore From Yesterday’s Workout,” Here’s What We Usually Ask First.

When someone walks in and says, “I’m sore from yesterday’s workout,” we don't immediately think, “Right… let's attack the sore bits.”

After treating Perth locals since 2013, one of the first things we usually ask is: “What did you train?”

Leg day? Running? Heavy lifting? A new exercise? Or maybe you simply did more than your body is used to?

That little conversation gives our therapists useful context before we even start. We also want to know where you feel sore, how it feels, and whether anything feels unusual — because not every post-workout ache needs the same approach.

One thing we've noticed over the years? Sometimes clients point to one sore muscle… then we start working and hear:

"Ohhh… apparently THAT'S sore too."

Your workout may have finished yesterday, but your muscles clearly didn't get the memo.

Sore the Day After Exercise? More Exercise Isn’t Always What Your Body Needs

Yesterday’s workout felt great. Today, getting out of the chair suddenly feels like a workout of its own.

After helping Perth locals since 2013, we’ve heard this countless times — especially from clients who train regularly. When they wake up feeling sore or stiff the next day, some immediately think, “I need another workout to loosen everything up.”

But your body doesn’t always need you to push harder.

How you feel after exercise can vary depending on the type and intensity of training, sleep, your usual activity level and recovery between sessions. A lighter day, gentle movement, comfortable stretching or simply some downtime may feel better than another hard session.

And if your muscles are asking for a quieter day, massage can be a relaxing addition to your recovery routine.

Sometimes self-care isn’t about doing more. It’s knowing when your body might appreciate a little less.
