Think getting older automatically means getting weaker? Think again.
One of the remarkable things about the human body is that muscle can continue to adapt to resistance training throughout life.
When you lift weights, you’re not simply making a muscle bigger.
Your nervous system becomes better at recruiting and coordinating muscle fibres, allowing you to generate more force. Over time, resistance training also stimulates changes within the muscle itself — supporting muscle protein synthesis, muscle fibre function and, with appropriate training and nutrition, increased muscle size.
That means you can become stronger even when dramatic changes in muscle size aren’t visible.
And age does not remove our ability to adapt.
Research consistently shows that older adults can improve strength and physical function through appropriately prescribed resistance training — including people who begin much later in life.
For women approaching or moving through menopause, maintaining strength becomes particularly important as we think about muscle, bone health, balance, metabolic health and maintaining independence as we age.
You don’t need to train like a 25-year-old.
You need to give your muscles a reason to adapt.
Challenge them. Fuel them. Recover. Repeat.

We’re not training just for today. We’re training for the 70, 80 and 90-year-old women we intend to become.
Want to know one of the most powerful predictors of how well you’ll age?
Look at how much muscle you’re carrying.
I’m not lifting heavy because I’m trying to be smaller.
I’m lifting heavy because I want to stay STRONG.
As we move through perimenopause, menopause and beyond, maintaining muscle and bone becomes increasingly important.
Sarcopenia — age-related loss of muscle mass and strength — can affect mobility, balance and independence.
Osteoporosis — our bones respond to load. Resistance and weight-bearing exercise provide the mechanical stimulus that helps maintain bone strength.
Brain fog & cognitive health — exercise isn’t just for our bodies. Regular physical activity is associated with better cognitive health and a lower risk of cognitive decline.
And this is something I want more women to understand:
We shouldn’t be frightened of lifting heavy.
Heavy is relative. It means progressively challenging your muscles safely and appropriately.
I’m not training for a bikini body.
I’m training so that in the decades ahead I can lift, climb, travel, work, think clearly, get myself off the floor and remain fiercely independent.
Muscle isn’t simply about how our bodies look.
It’s an investment in our future health.
And if you came along to our last women’s health evening, you’ll know these nights are definitely not a boring health lecture.
We talked. We learnt. We laughed. We asked the questions women often don’t get the opportunity to ask — and the room was absolutely buzzing.
So we’re doing it again.

WHAT IF ONE OF THE MOST RESEARCHED SUPPLEMENTS FOR WOMEN IN MENOPAUSE HAS BEEN HIDING IN THE GYM AISLE? 👀💪
Creatine isn’t just for bodybuilders.
During peri-menopause and menopause, maintaining muscle, strength and bone health becomes increasingly important — and creatine is one of the most researched supplements for supporting muscle performance.
Combined with resistance training, creatine may help support:
💪 Muscle strength and lean muscle mass
🦴 Bone-supportive exercise and healthy ageing
⚡ Exercise performance and recovery
🧠 Emerging research is also exploring potential benefits for cognition and brain health
The important bit? Creatine works best alongside resistance training — not instead of it.

YOUR BONES ARE LISTENING TO HOW YOU MOVE
Bone isn’t a lifeless structure. It is living tissue that is constantly adapting and rebuilding.
And one of the signals it responds to is LOAD.
When we perform resistance and weight-bearing exercise — think squats, lunges, lifting weights, climbing stairs and impact exercise where appropriate — mechanical forces travel through our bones.
🦴 Osteocytes are the cells embedded within bone that act like tiny mechanical sensors. They detect changes in load and help signal when bone needs to adapt.
🔨 Osteoblasts are our bone-building cells. They produce new bone matrix, which can then mineralise and contribute to bone strength.
There are also osteoclasts, which break down old or damaged bone as part of normal bone remodelling.
Throughout life, bone is continually being broken down → rebuilt → remodelled.
This becomes particularly important around perimenopause and menopause, when declining oestrogen can accelerate bone loss.
That’s why resistance and appropriate weight-bearing exercise are such important parts of healthy ageing.
Walking is wonderful — but it may not provide enough stimulus on its own.
Your bones need a reason to stay strong.
💪 Lift
🏋️ Load
🦴 Build
Exercise needs to be appropriate for your individual health, fitness and fracture risk. If you have osteoporosis, a history of fractures or other medical concerns, seek advice from an appropriately qualified health professional before starting a new exercise program.

MENOPAUSE IS NOT A REASON TO STOP LIFTING. IT’S A REASON TO START. 💪
One of the latest major studies on women and resistance training has delivered a message I think every woman in midlife needs to hear:
It is NOT too late to get stronger.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport looked at 126 studies involving 4,019 women — with more than 66% of them postmenopausal.
And the finding I love?
Postmenopausal women still respond extremely well to resistance training.
Women after menopause experienced improvements in:
• muscular strength
• muscle/functional mass
• body composition, including reductions in fat mass
Importantly, the researchers found no significant difference in these training responses between premenopausal and postmenopausal women.
In other words, menopause does not mean your opportunity to build strength has disappeared.
And strength in our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond isn’t just about how we look.
It’s about being able to get off the floor.
Carry the shopping.
Travel.
Protect our independence.
Maintain muscle as we age.
And continue doing the things we love for as long as possible.
We spend a lot of time talking about what women lose during menopause.
Maybe we need to start talking more about what we can build.
Muscle is something we can actively invest in.
So if you’ve been waiting to start resistance training because you think you’re too old, too unfit or you’ve left it too late…
The research says otherwise.
Pick up the weights. Your future self will thank you.
