She was featured by AAP and interviewed on ABC’s The Conversation Hour as part of major research from the University of Melbourne, about what actually happens in the salons.

Dr Hannah McCann spent 8 years speaking with hundreds of hairdressers and clients across Australia. What she found? That the salon chair is one of the only places people feel safe enough to share the things they can’t say anywhere else. Grief. Illness. Relationships. Things that go so far beyond hair.

This research isn’t just about what clients share. it’s also about recognising the emotional work our team carries, often with no time to process it between appointments. Hairdressers are not therapists. But they show up, they listen, and they hold space in a way that genuinely matters.
