I’ve been seeing a lot of conversations around pricing in the beauty industry lately, and I’m actually here for it. I think we SHOULD be talking about money, sharing knowledge and helping each other understand what it really costs to run a business.

But I think there’s something we need to remember when we’re questioning how another artist prices their services or chooses to run their business.

We’re not all building the same business or living the same life. I’ll use myself as an example. I’m a single-income household, and my makeup business is my main source of income. It needs to cover my business expenses, my personal bills and allow me to pay myself a wage.

Another artist might have a second income, a partner contributing to household expenses, different overheads, different working hours or completely different goals for their business.

Neither business is wrong. They’re just different.
And that’s before we even get into experience, education, products, services, travel, the type of clients we work with and the boundaries we choose to have.

I think these conversations are important for clients to understand, too. Just because two Adelaide makeup artists offer makeup services doesn’t mean you’re necessarily comparing the same experience, service or business.

I’ve spent a lot of time recently breaking down my own numbers, and it’s been a pretty confronting exercise. But it’s also reminded me why it’s so important to understand YOUR business rather than base your decisions on what everyone around you is doing.

Let’s keep talking about pricing. Let’s share knowledge and support each other. But let’s not compare someone else’s business using our own circumstances.
